FOUNDATION CURRICULUM

We have redesigned our foundation curriculum for 2024 – 2025 to meet the needs of the pupils and specifically target their learning pathway. Pupils on the ‘Life Ready’ pathway will have targeted learning towards life skills, pupils on the ‘Employment Ready’ pathway will have their learning targeted towards work experience and skills for the workplace and pupils on the ‘College Ready’ pathway have a more traditional academic approach.

All pupils in Key Stage 4 work towards ASDAN Lifeskills Challenges for their foundation curriculum regardless of which pathway they are on. Teachers select challenges appropriate to learning and pathway needs. Lifeskills Challenge is an online bank of challenges for learners working from pre-Entry to Level 3. This programme enables centres to meet individual needs by providing a personalised curriculum for young people with SEND or those facing barriers to learning. Pupils at Hazel Oak will gain qualifications from working towards Entry Level 1 to Level 1.

OPTIONS

Once a week the 4 KS4 classes join together to complete specific and appropriate to level ASDAN Lifeskills Challenges on a topic of their choice. Each term, teachers select a Lifeskills Challenge and present to the pupils in an assembly what the challenge will entail. Pupils will then pick which challenge they would like to work towards. Pupils will be given an option to work towards pre-entry level to Level 1, depending on their academic level.

Example of Options: History, Geography, Music, Drama, Art, Construction, Crafting, D&T, MFL, Outdoor Activities
These subjects are offered across the year.

Sixth Form:

The main aim of Sixth Form is to prepare students for life after Hazel Oak. Our 6th form is based at Solihull College and University Campus on Blossomfield Road in Solihull. This allows students to experience space within a mainstream provision: they have regular access to the main canteen and gym.

FOUNDATION CURRICULUM

Our main focus at Hazel Oak Sixth Form is to provide pupils with the skills they need for when they leave Hazel Oak and begin their journey into adulthood. Many students continue education at local College settings on courses which suit their needs and meet their interests.

Some pupils complete the ASDAN Employability course, achieving Entry Level 3 or Level 1. Some pupils complete the ASDAN Personal and Social Development course, achieving Entry Level 2 or Entry Level 3.

All pupils work towards the PSHE ASDAN Short Course.

Pupils sit all exams and meet the requirements for the above courses at the end of Year 13. In some cases, pupils leave Hazel Oak to start a course at an alternative provision at the end of Year 12. Those pupils do not leave with any further formal qualifications. However, they will have worked towards the above courses and will leave with those skills, knowledge and learning.
